Greetings, I’m Wes Coulson from Dent Coulson Elder Law, and this will be your Elder Law Minute. We’re happy to present these because we think we can help inform you as to the ways in which we can help you, and the things that you need to think about relative to the elder care and estate planning journey. Hope you enjoy.
Let me give you a little sports analogy that’s going to translate into some practical advice. At a theoretical level, a baseball team would have its best pitcher pitch every single game, and, in any sport, you’d have the best players for every minute of every game. The thing is, no manager, or coach, would be foolish enough to do that because they would realize human beings wear out, they need rest.
I hope that if you are a caregiver, you will allow yourself that same realization. We tend to have the idea that, when we are helping a loved one, that it has to be on us. The unfortunate thing about that is that I, as an elder law attorney, see too many situations in which a person who wanted to stay at home needs to go into a nursing home simply because their caregiver, spouse or developed child, has worn out to the point where they just can’t do it anymore.
So if you want to do yourself, and do a loved one, that favor, recognize your limitations. Get help. Bring in a geriatic care manager and get some advice on developing a care plan. Bring in a home care agency, get some help, get some rest, but be ready for the end of that game, so you can keep your loved one at home for as long as possible. Thanks!
