Hi, my name is Paige Fox. I’m a Senior Associate Attorney here at Dent Coulson Elder Law. I understand these topics can be very complex, so I’m hoping these Elder Law Minutes bring some insight and a better understanding to both potential and current clients. Thank you.
Hi, I’m Paige—and this is Blue Bear!
Today, we’re here to talk about estate planning for your pets. A lot of people, like me, love their pets dearly. But it’s something we often overlook: What will happen to my pet if I pass away? Who will care for them—especially if they’re a little crabby, like Blue Bear?
One option you may not know about is including a pet trust within a living trust. I’ve done this many times for clients. It allows you to create provisions in your estate planning documents that specify not only who should take care of your pet, but also how funds should be used for their care.
Similar to guardianship provisions for children in a will, a pet trust can outline who you want your pet to live with and how you want them cared for. For example, you could arrange monthly payments to a designated caregiver to help with your pet’s food, vet visits, grooming, or any special needs.
Personally, I’ve arranged for my pets to go to my significant other, and a portion of money is set aside in a pet trust specifically to take care of my dogs.
So, if you’re thinking about creating an estate plan—and especially if you’re a devoted pet owner—you absolutely have the option to protect your pets’ future. Whether you have a puppy, kitty, bird, or any beloved companion, we can help.
