Medicare and Nursing Home Care: Is it covered?

How does Medicare and Nursing Home care work together? While it is true that Medicare does pay for some nursing home expenses, the coverage is quite limited and is only for a short period of time.

Medicare and Nursing Home Care: Is it covered?

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute. Today, I want to answer the question of whether Medicare pays for Nursing Home care. The answer is, by and large, that it does not. The only thing Medicaid pays for is short-term rehab stays. You have to have been in the hospital as an in-patient for at least three days, need the care within 30 days, and then you have to receive skilled care, which generally means some type of rehab. The most that the benefits will pay for is 100 days. Medicare pays all the first 20 days, subject to a very significant deductible in days 21-100, then your Medicare supplement insurance may pick up. But, it only provides the benefit as long as you’re receiving skilled care. So, although the maximum number of days is 100, the average is closer to 30. Thanks.
