In this Elder Law Minute, Kaye DeSelms Dent explains the importance of making time for estate planning to ensure peace of mind and preparedness.
Hi, I’m Kaye DeSelms Dent with Dent Coulson Elder Law here with an elder law minute for you. These videos are intended to educate you about the elder care journey which begins earlier in life than you might think. We hope that you find them useful and if you have further questions, please call us at Dent Coulson Elderlaw.
Today, I just really want to remind people to take time to make time. Or is it make time to take time? As I’m filming this, I’m gearing up for vacations. The rest of my team is gearing up for their summer vacations. Everybody’s busy. We’re trying to figure out when we can get together for a summer retreat. And I know the same kind of concepts apply to when can you get together to discuss with your family, your spouse, even just if you’re if you’re single or doing this on your own, just getting together with the attorney to discuss your estate planning.
And it’s one of those things where routinely people tell me, “We’ve been putting this off for years.” And that’s that’s just a very common thing for people. First of all, it’s not the most fun thing to do. Vacation’s a lot more fun. And it’s it’s not something people, you know, always want to talk about. A lot of other things get in the way and they keep thinking, “Oh, I’ll just wait until this happens.” And you just really can’t wait because you never know when it’s going to be too late. You never know what might happen. Not everybody is going to live forever. People become disabled unexpectedly.
And it really does give you actually a lot of peace of mind, believe it or not, to have your planning in place and have it done. And I’ve got to tell you, many times I’ve gone off with my family in a plane and I thought, boy, if something happens to us, at least for those people we’re leaving behind, everything’s taken care of. There’s a plan in place. People know what they’re supposed to do. And that gives me a real sense of peace that I’ve taken care of the people and things that are important to me and I can go off and live my life.
So I would encourage all of you out there not to put it off any longer. Make an appointment. We’d love to chat with you about your planning needs and give you that peace of mind for you and your family.
