The Importance of Planning Ahead of Time to Help with Caregiver Stress
Today I want to remind everyone how important it is to look at long term care insurance, and I’m going to get a little personal today. I just had my fifty second birthday, my husband is about a year older than me, and just after his fifty second birthday last year, he entered assisted living with early onset dementia. Thankfully we had long term care insurance. The one time I listened to my dear now gone father he told me as he was retiring, get your long term care insurance now, it will be as cheap for you now as it ever will be, you’ll be locked in if somebody gets sick you’ll be taken care of.
He had really researched it, he studied everything and he gave me some fantastic advice. Now, we jumped the gun so to speak and I think I was not even quite thirty-nine years old when I purchased my policy, that’s on the young side. But I do encourage clients to start looking at long term care insurance by the age of fifty. Now for my husband and I, if we would have waited until the age fifty, it would have been too late, because the signs were already there, around the time he turned fifty. And certainly by fifty-two, we had already had the diagnosis and he was entering the first stage of care.
Here at Dent Coulson Elder Law we like to work with our client’s other providers such as insurance agents to make sure that they have proper insurance coverage, and to incorporate their coverages into their estate plan.
