Why There’s No Such Thing as a “Quick Question” in Elder Law

In this Elder Law Minute, Kaye DeSelms Dent explains why “quick questions” often require deeper conversations to properly protect your interests.

Introduction

Hi, I’m Kaye DeSelms Dent with Dent Coulson Elder Law here with an elder law minute for you. These videos are intended to educate you about the elder care journey which begins earlier in life than you might think. We hope that you find them useful and if you have further questions, please call us at Dent Coulson Elder Law.

There Is No Such Thing as a “Quick Question”

Today I just want to run through a really quick topic um which isn’t quick. Questions are not quick. It’s very common for people to call um really any attorney’s office and say I just have a quick question. But the problem is that as attorneys we’re trained that so much lies beneath the surface and we have to in response to your quick question ask you a lot more detailed questions.

Why Consultations Matter

So, in my practice, what we prefer is to start out with a consultation where we can sit down and really take some time to talk about your questions and concerns and literally 100% of the time tell you about issues that you haven’t thought about and delve into those other questions that your questions lead to.

How We Handle Client Questions

For existing clients, we usually like to set up a specific time for a phone call so that we’re not, you know, playing phone tag back and forth and we can really devote at least, you know, 15 minutes to finding out what your question is and is it something that we can answer pretty succinctly because we’re already dealing with something for you. or if we need to have a sit-down meeting, maybe review some documents, maybe do a little research or give you some homework to get us more documents or more answers to our questions.

The Bottom Line

So, the the moral of the story is you may have a quick question, but that’s going to result in us asking you a probably a pretty long list of questions. And we’re always happy to do that. We’re here to be your trusted adviser on the elder care journey and give us a call anytime at Dent Coulson Elder Law.
