In this Elder Law Minute, Crystal Post explains how trusts offer flexible asset management during life and after death.

Hi, I’m Crystal Post. I’m the new Junior Associate at Dent Coulson Elder Law. I’m really hoping that these Elder Law Minutes provide some insight and understanding to complex issues that everyday people face in the estate planning journey.
I’m going to expand a little bit on the benefits of creating a trust over a will. So many people are familiar with a will and how a will disposes of your property after you’re no longer here, but a trust can manage your assets while you’re alive, in addition to disposing of your property when you’re no longer here.
Trusts also are very flexible in that they can account for lots of different family situations. A situation that we see often is blended families. And with that, a lot of times you want to control when certain assets are distributed and to whom.
In terms of managing your assets while you’re still alive, this is really helpful if you, God forbid, get into an accident and become incapacitated. Trusts can account for that too.
If you’d like to discuss this further, please give us a call.
