The supporting documents for your Medicaid application require just as much attention as the application,itself. Not knowing exactly what to include or how to give accurate explanations could result in a delay in Medicaid eligibility or even a denial of the whole application.

Medicaid Supporting Documents: The application is just the start

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute, continuing our series on the Medicaid Application Process.
A lot of times, people will fill out the Medicaid application, say, “You know, that was pretty tough,” send it in, “Whew, made it past that.” “Boy, I’m happy to be past that.” Then they get the request for supporting documents. Let me tell you that, typically, the set of supporting documents they ask for tends to fill at least one large envelope, sometimes two. They typically want, particularly in Illinois, to see every record of every bank account you or, if you’re married, your spouse have now. Anything that you have closed within five years, same thing with investment accounts, every check you’ve issued within the last five years for $1,000, or more.
In other words, an awful lot of stuff. And again, the same thing I’ve said with regard to the application, if you don’t know why they’re asking for this, if you don’t know that unless you give a good explanation you may have problems. You are falling into a trap that could well result in the denial of the application or a delay in eligibility. Moral of the story, once again, you really benefit from legal help. Thanks.
