Understanding What it Means to Choose Hospice

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute. I want to talk to you today about what it means to choose hospice.
First of all, it doesn’t mean that somebody is going to die immediately. What it means is that you’ve made a choice to have Medicare pay for palliative, or comfort care, rather than curative care. So if somebody has a terminal condition, it would be wise to choose hospice. Interestingly, it’s not a permanent choice if circumstances change, if it appears that there is some treatment that can extend your life, or even cure your condition. You can elect back out of hospice, in fact, you can make that election and change it as often as the circumstances may require. So choosing hospice in a lot of cases is a wise thing. Thanks.
