Be Brave, Be Strong, and Don’t Give Up

In the final piece of our five-part series Handling the Difficult Conversation with a Loved One about Facility Placement: Tips for Success, Wes Coulson offers this encouraging tip to help keep you focused on the fact that you are doing the right thing.

Tip 5 – Be Brave, Be Strong, and Don’t Give Up

In this Elder Law Minute, and the fifth and final of our series, Wes Coulson’s reassuring advice to “be brave, be strong and don’t give up” will help when dealing with these difficult conversations with your elderly loved one.

Be Brave, Be Strong, and Don’t Give Up

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute. This is the last in our series on Handling the Difficult Conversation with a Parent or other Loved One about Nursing Home or Assisted Living Placement.

Today, I want like to talk to you about something that I guess psychologists would say, “Dealing with your own head trash.” So, I’m going to try to put that a bit less harshly and, as a positive spin, saying you have to keep focused on the fact that if you’re having these conversations, you’re doing the right thing. You need to be brave. You need to be strong. You need to be persistent. And, you need to not let your frustration overwhelm you. Nobody’s going to tell you these are going to be easy conversations. And, nobody can promise you, no matter what tips I can give you, that you’re going to be successful the first, or maybe even the second or the third or the fourth time. But, it’s really important, you know, your responsibility is to make sure that you are doing what you think is right for your loved one. And, if that takes a few moments of quiet tears on the side and putting the happy face on and saying, “I need to do this” and trying it again. You know, that’s what you need to do. Thanks.
