Memory Care: The relatively new option for Alzheimer’s care

If you have a family member with Alzheimer’s and you’re considering facility placement, a Memory Care facility is definitely something you want to look into. People with Alzheimer’s are often in good health but need extra attention and help. They also may have a tendency to wander, so people with Alzheimer’s often need more security for their safety. In a Memory Care facility, you will typically see a greater level of staffing as well as a greater level of secured areas.

In this Elder Law Minute, Wes Coulson, Southern Illinois Elder Law attorney, discusses an important topic covered in The Alzheimer’s Guide: Practical Advice for Families, Caregivers and Professionals on the concept of a Memory Care facility and suggests why it may be a good choice for a family member with Alzheimer’s.

Memory Care: The relatively new option for Alzheimer’s care

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute. This is another in our series of videos that relate to things covered in our Alzheimer’s Guide. Today I want to talk about Memory Care facilities. Maybe you’ve heard that expression, but you’re not quite sure what a Memory Care facility is. There are two main things that I think underlay the concept of a Memory Care facility and why it can be such a good choice for a family member with Alzheimer’s.

First of all, people who have Alzheimer’s are often in good health and don’t necessarily need so much skilled nursing attention like they would get in a skilled nursing home. But, they do need extra attention, they do need extra help. So, what you’re going to see typically in a Memory Care facility is maybe not any more skilled nursing staffing, but a greater level of staffing so that you can be more responsive.

The second thing you are typically going to see in a Memory Care facility is that it’s secure, and that’s an important safety consideration. People with Alzheimer’s have a tendency to wander out and you do not want to find out that your loved one has spent the night outside in cold weather. So, having that security to keep people in place is another really important consideration.

So, if you have a family member with Alzheimer’s and you’re considering facility placement, a Memory Care facility is definitely something you want to look into. Thanks.
