The Importance Of Decorating For Someone With Alzheimer’s

It’s really sad when a loved one starts forgetting family member’s names and the importance of decorating for someone with Alzheimer’s becomes more necessary. Whether that loved one is in a nursing home or still at home, they can benefit from this idea that came out of planning sessions with some of our clients.

Get various family photos, tag them with the names of people in the photos, frame them and put them up for that person with Alzheimer’s to see frequently. This will give them a constant reminder to connect names with faces and may enable them to renew old memories.

In this Elder Law Minute, Wes Coulson, Southern Illinois Elder Law attorney, discusses the importance of decorating for someone with Alzheimer’s by displaying family member photos captioned with their names and relationships.

The Importance Of Decorating For Someone With Alzheimer’s

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute. I want to talk to you today about something that has a little bit to do with planning, but it’s more just a neat idea that we’ve developed in discussions with some clients.

When someone is in a nursing home, we tell them that one of the good things to do is to spend down on things that will help make their life better. Well, out of that came the idea is that if you have a family member going into a nursing home on Alzheimer’s, or even if they’re still at home, a neat thing to do is to get various family photos, tag them with the names of people in the photos, frame them and put them up for that person with Alzheimer’s to see frequently.

It does a good of enabling them by looking at older photographs to renew old memories. And it also makes it easier, giving them the constant reminder of putting names and faces together. Because it’s really sad when you have, and it does happen, a family member with Alzheimer’s who starts forgetting family members names. So, it’s a neat way of helping that out a little bit. Thanks.
